George Washington Carver National Monument
George Washington Carver National Monument, in southern Missouri, is the site of the birthplace and childhood home of the famous African American scientist and educator. Established in 1943, the 210-acre monument honors the contributions of Carver, who was born to slave parents and rose to prominence as an outstanding innovator in agricultural science. The Carver main house has been restored. The monument also contains a statue of Carver as a boy, a springhouse for storing perishables, and a family cemetery. The acreage includes woodlands, streams, a pond, and tallgrass prairie.
