George Washington Birthplace National Monument

George Washington Birthplace National Monument, in Wakefield, Va., marks the site where George Washington was born in 1732. Established as a monument in 1930, the 538-acre site lies on the high bank of Pope's Creek in Westmoreland County and is near the sandy shore of the Potomac River. The site contains a memorial mansion, gardens, and family burial grounds containing the graves of the first U.S. president, his father, his great-grandfather, and 28 other ancestors. The mansion is a 1930 re-creation of the home originally built before 1718 by George's father, Augustine.
