Fort Scott National Historic Site
The Fort Scott National Historic Site is located in Fort Scott, Kansas and stands on the grounds of the fort that was once charged with the protection of the 'Permanent Indian Frontier.' The U.S. Army abandoned Fort Scott in 1853 and the its buildings and surrounding areas were purchased by local settlers from the government in 1855. The town of Fort Scott flourished despite the trials of the Civil War and was in constant competition with Kansas City as a major railroad depot west of the Mississippi.
