Fort Raleigh National Historic Site
The Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, Roanoke Island, North Carolina commemorates the first attempts at English colonization in the New World in the years 1585 to 1587. These settlement efforts were sponsored by Sir Walter Raleigh and resulted in the mysterious disappearance of 116 men, women, and children. The fate of these settlers is still a matter of debate and the expedition has been historically referred to as the "Lost Colony." The site includes a reconstruction of an earthen fort, very similar to the one that was built here by the British.
