Fort Moultrie
Fort Moultrie National Monument. Fort Moultrie, on Sullivan's Island at the entrance to the harbor of Charleston, S.C., was named Fort Sullivan. It was held by a garrison of American troops under Col. William Moultrie (1730-1805) against a 10-ship British attack on June 28, 1776, in the American Revolution. Renamed to honor Moultrie, a new structure built on the site (1807-11) became the Confederate headquarters for the bombardment of Fort Sumter in April 1861 at the beginning of the U.S. Civil War. Part of the Fort Sumter National Monument, it contains the tomb of the Seminole chief Osceola, imprisoned there during the Seminole Wars.
