Fort Davis National Historic Site
The Fort Davis National Historic Site stands among the remnants of Fort Davis, a key post in the U.S. military's defense of West Texas. The ruins that remain at the Fort Davis National Historic Site are more extensive and well-preserved than any other southwestern fort. The fort was the base for U.S. troops charged with guarding emigrants, freighters, and stagecoaches from raids by the Comanche and Apache Indians. During the summer months, guides dressed in the styles of the 1880s provide an in-depth look at the living conditions of those stationed at Fort Davis and their daily lives.
