Fire Island National Seashore

Fire Island is a low and narrow barrier island in southeastern New York just south of the coast of central Long Island about 30 miles long. A popular site for summer recreation, it has a variety of communities that can be reached only by ferries or private craft, and few vehicles are allowed on its wooden walkways. Owners and renters flock to resort villages, each with its own singular character and residential group. In 1964 most of the island was made a national seashore, and its beaches, dunes, groves of pitch pine, and other species are protected by federal law.
