Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument
Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument in the Panhandle of northern Texas was established in 1965 to preserve quarries used as a source of flint by Paleo-Indian peoples 12,000 years ago as well as by Plains Indians during historic times. Covering a 1,371-acre area 35 miles northeast of Amarillo, Tex., the monument is situated on the south shore of Lake Meredith, a reservoir on the Canadian River. Guided tours, conducted twice daily, take visitors to the sites where hard nodules of flint were quarried from beds of soft limestone for thousands of years before the arrival of white Europeans.
