Field hockey, which originated in ancient Egypt, Persia, and Greece, is a game that is similar to ice hockey and lacrosse in which players on two teams use a stick to hit a ball into the opposing team's net. The sport of field hockey was organized by the English, who also established the majority of its modern rules. The first field hockey club was formed in the 1860s and the sport is so popular in England and its former colonies like India that that these countries have dominated field hockey in the Olympics.
