Archery & Bow Hunting
Archery, which is the sport involving the shooting of arrows with a bow, first served as a hunting technique thousands of years ago. Later on, the bow and arrow was introduced as a weapon by the Persian civilization and continued to be used in warfare until the development of firearms in the 15th century. Archery as a form of target shooting eventually evolved into a competitive sport throughout the world. The Federation Internationale de Tir l'Arc (FITA) staged the first world championships in1931 and created separate competitions for men and women in 1933. This section focuses on archery and bow hunting.
