Awards and Honors Societies
Many colleges and universities offer students honor societies. Membership in these organizations is based on academic merit and integrity. The honor system in education places upon the students themselves the responsibility for upholding high ethical standards in academic work. The system has been applied particularly to written examinations, with the intention of doing away with faculty supervision. Under an honor system no staff members are present to monitor student conduct during tests; students are left alone and are placed on their honor not to cheat or condone cheating by others.
