Macintosh Compilers

Compilers are computer software applications used for translating programs from higher languages into lower, more easily understandable languages for other computers. High-level language are similar to human languages and are used for problem-solving in particular applications areas, i.e., COBOL for business, and FORTH for scientific applications. High-level languages are versatile and can be used by many different computer systems in the same format, and are thus called machine independent. A compiler, designed for one specific computer, is machine dependent. Compilers are used for long programs for the best efficiency, and manufacturers of computers supply compilers for each separate program.
