The science of cryptology pertains to the study of secret writing or communications in code or cipher, which itself is referred to as cryptography. Cryptography has existed since ancient times and was formulated in such countries as Egypt, India and China. The Spartans was one of the earliest groups to utilize cryptography and it is also believed that Julius Caesar employed a form of secret writing during his reign in ancient Rome. Over time, cryptography has become an increasingly controversial aspect of communications, thus resulting in industry and government regulation.
