Computer manufacturers and manufacturing. Manufacturing is the process by which raw materials or components are fabricated and assembled into finished products. Manufacturing has evolved from a relatively simple system of hand-tool production carried on within a household or workshop by individual workers into the modern factory system with its large, highly mechanized labor force. This article deals primarily with manufacturing in the United States, which in its early years in many respects recapitulates the longer span of development in Europe and then parallels Europe throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
