Reading and Writing Poems and Nursery Rhymes
What is poetry? The term is often equated with verse; any metrical and rhymed composition. However, poetry is also a verbal art which can elicit an emotional response. In children's poetry, the works are most often playful. A nursery rhyme is a short poem recited or sung to entertain or instruct children. Many are centuries old, and hundreds exist in the English language. Two of the earliest published collections are 'Tommy Thumb's Pretty Song Book' (1744) and 'Mother Goose's Melody' (c.1760).
