The word 'magazine' comes from the French 'magasin', meaning "storehouse." Today's magazines are regularly-issued, paper-covered, bound storehouses meant to instruct, entertain, or inform. Although they cover a diversity of subjects, most fall into one of four categories. Magazines intended for the general public are known as "consumer", or "general" magazines. Specialized magazines, with information for a specific discipline, industry, government, finance, or business, are known as "trade" and "technical" magazines. Agricultural publications are classified as "farm" magazines, and literary journals, usually non-commercial and low circulation, are known as "little" magazines.
