U.S. Federal Reserve System & Branches
The Federal Reserve System functions as the central bank of the United States. The most important function of the Federal Reserve System is to control the supply of money and credit in available in the country. All national commercial banks are required by law to be members of the Federal Reserve System. Within the Federal Reserve System, there are twelve Federal Reserve Banks with a total of twenty-five Federal Reserve Bank branches. State chartered banks are not required to obtain membership in the Federal Reserve System, but all institutions that take deposits are subject to specific standards and regulations that are established by the Federal Reserve System.
