The Federal Reserve System functions as the central bank of the United States. The most important function of the Federal Reserve System is to control the supply of money and credit in available in the country. The governing body of the Federal Reserve System is the Board of Governors, known as the Federal Reserve Board. It is the responsibility of the Federal Reserve Board to oversee the administration and policy development of the Federal Reserve System. The Board consists of seven members, each appointed by the President of the United States. The current Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board is Alan Greenspan.
