Federal Reserve System & Policies
Established in 1913 to inspire confidence and foster stability in the U.S. banking industry, The Federal Reserve System is the central bank of the United States. While controlled by a centralized Board of Governors, it is divided into twelve privately controlled banks serving regional districts. All national banks must belong to the Federal Reserve System while state banks belong voluntarily. Its purpose is to hold the deposits of commercial banks and operate a nationwide check-clearing system. It also controls of the size of the money supply, which affects interest rates and, indirectly, the level of economic activity, unemployment, and inflation.
