Federal Reserve Board & Banks

The Federal Reserve Board oversees the financial services industry in the United States. It controls the issuance of currency, regulates member banks of the Federal Reserve System, and determines the establishment of bank branches, controls bank purchases and mergers, and regulates bank-holding companies. It also determines monetary policy, which affects interest rates and the money supply, indirectly affecting the level of economic activity, unemployment, and inflation. Raising the legal reserve requirements of member banks or when it sells government securities reduces the money supply and tightens credit. Lowering reserve requirements or buying securities has the opposite effect. The links included herein relate to the Federal Reserve Board and the member banks.
