The American financial services industry is highly competitive. Since the deregulation of the 1980s and 1990s, the differences between the types of institutions have become indistinct. Commercial banks, savings and loan associations, savings banks, credit unions, and money market funds compete for personal and nonprofit institutional business. Savings and loan associations and savings banks invest most of their funds in mortgages, providing stiff competition with commercial banks in that market. Those institutions, along with credit unions and finance companies, compete with commercial banks for consumer loans and are now allowed, with certain restrictions, to make business loans.
