Twentieth Century Art
In the beginning of the 20th century abstraction was by far the most popular artistic movement. Like most prominent developments in the 19th century, it originated and flourished in Paris. Among the various forms of abstract art, cubism was perhaps the most widely known, with Pablo Picasso's Demoiselles d'Avignon (1906-07) being the virtual springboard for the movement. Piet Mondrian's Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow (1930) showed the world art that was entirely dependant on pure relationships of primary colors and forms. Eventually the movement reached America, with the likes of Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, Wilhelm de Kooning and others creating what would be referred to as modern art.
