Tribal and Native Art

Tribal art, native art & native american art. The term tribe was used to indicate a group of people sharing common values, customs, language, territory, and usually ancestry. The term applied to very small groups or populations of several million people. Tribes may be genetically heterogeneous, due to the absorption of people of other cultural or genetic backgrounds through marriage, conquest, or political alliance. The term tribe has become outdated, due largely to the fact that it carries negative connotations of backwardness and savagery. Native Americans, however, maintain their tribal culture and the artistic and social traditions therein. The links included herein relate to tribal art and the history of such art.
