Although now applied to works in the fields of literature, music, and cinema, Expressionism was a term used by a group of early 20th century German artists to describe their art and aesthetic principles. As an artistic movement, Expressionism rejected traditional pictorial naturalism in favor of bold emotional expression portrayed through the use of violent color and radical distortions of form. The original group of German expressionist painters were known as "The Bridge," and they asserted that the value of one's emotional experience was a measure of one's moral and artistic values.
