John Gaudet

I am a free-lance writer, author, ecologist, and specialist in papyrus. My web site: www.fieldofreeds.com contains a synopsis and background of my latest work, a popular history of the ancient plant, a plant that changed the history of the world. A Fulbright Scholar to both India and Malaya, my research on papyrus, funded by the National Geographic Society, took me to Uganda and Kenya. I taught biology at Makerere University in Kampala during the early reign of the eccentric and brutal dictator, Idi Amin, a man responsible for 100-400,000 deaths (see Forest Whitaker in the recent movie, The Last King of Scotland). My seventeen years in Africa forms the basis for my book, The Iron Snake, a historical novel about a railroad in Kenya built at the end of the Victorian era (Brandylane Publishers, Richmond, VA see: www.theironsnake.com). The railroad stretched from Mombasa on the coast to Lake Victoria in the interior and was referred to at the time as the Lunatic Express.

Interests and Hobbies:
Married and living in the Washington, D.C., metro area, I pursue a writing career and full-time promotion of my work, which has appeared in the Washington Post and local magazines such as Pleasant Living, a bi-monthly magazine dealing with life in the Chesapeake Bay area. My novel, The Iron Snake, is a fast-moving story of a railroad in Africa that affected the lives of millions. Read more on: www.theironsnake.com
