Katherine Westphal

Formal educational background:
BA in Political Science from Illionois Wesleyan University, plus several years graduate study in Political Science, focusing on International Relations.

Informal background:
Since leaving academia, I have engaged in a wide range of personal research including but not limited to, history, psychology, social violence, spirituality, nutrition, herbs, reiki and other forms of energic healing, the structure of the universe, the meaning of life, and, of course, the negative effects of television.

I have a passion for the truth and tend to be ruthless in pursuing it.

I have channeled that passion into my Trash Your TV! website (www.TrashYourTV.com). Through difficult experience and wide-ranging research, I have discovered just how severely people are being affected by that innocent-looking box.

After much consideration, I have come to the conclusion that many of the ills of modern life can be traced to the influence of the television set. The TV is literally sucking up family time, community time, play time, exercise time, and outdoor time. It is contributing to violence, consumerism, obesity, and more. No other aspect of modern life comes close to its influece, although video games and computers can serve as substitutes.

Not everyone falls under its spell and my message is not for those who watch a few movies and a show here and there. It is for the average person who clocks in 4 hours 32 minutes EVERY DAY. I have calculated that America as a whole watches 1.33 billion hours every day. Scary.

I hope to change that statistic and help people get back the time that is being sucked into tubes around the world. However, I am staunchly opposed to accomplishing this through coercive measures such as government regulation or trying to force the media to change.

Instead, I hope to empower people to do it themselves through knowledge and practical strategies to control viewing, such as the tips on my websites and the comprehensive strategies in The TV-Free System.

Of course, what people do with the 4.5 hours per day is entirely up to them.

Imagine what you could do with that amount of time.

Every day.

For the rest of your life.
