Merry Rosenfield

I’m a self-taught artist, no claims to higher training in this area. However, I’ve made my living as a jeweler since the mid 1980s, a fact I’m rather proud of.

Since childhood I’ve been a writer. When I was 13 years old I won a city-wide writing contest with a series of Haiku that I composed. For that I won a copy of Kahil Gibran’s The Prophet and got to shake the mayor’s hand, a great honor back then.

Fast forwarding closer to the present, I’ve participated in juried art shows for many years, traveling with my husband and my booth from California to New York. Although I still do some traveling for my business, these days my online store allows me to stay home more often than not. I’d much rather fill orders from my home studio and be amused by our 3 ½ year old granddaughter!

Interests and Hobbies:
Writing has become important to me again. I’ve started work on a book about a beloved child- a therapeutic activity stirring up thoughts and memories I thought I’d lost forever.

Another interest of mine is the animal kingdom, all of it. I’m drawn to animals from Madagascar, the Galapagos Islands and Australia in particular- those formally isolated places where creatures developed creatively apart from the rest of the world.

But I’m happy to watch our local lizards and bugs going about their business in my backyard. Especially at night when a rubbery looking gecko might go hunting on the window right in front of my desk- taking advantage of the easy pickings attracted to the light.

I enjoy posting several times a week on my blog which covers news, views, articles and information for other animal lovers.

I spend a good deal of time creating new designs for my jewelry line. This activity I can get lost in for hours. What I love to do, and what I have to do to eat and pay the mortgage intersect perfectly in my life.

Music has always been important to me as well. A few years ago a friend gave us a piano, and I keep swearing that one of these days I’ll learn to play. I have some expertise in singing and playing the mountain dulcimer, but I also have an autoharp, a psaltery and a guitar. Sadly, they mostly gather dust now, but I have a promise to myself that someday they’ll be resurrected.

I also love to read. Mostly classic science fiction and philosophy- but there are some excellent modern fiction writers I wish I had more time to enjoy.
