Zsa Zsa Gabor in the Hospital, Might Have Leg Amputated

Zsa Zsa Gabor has been largely out of the spotlight since a car accident and stroke over the past ten years, and now she is having part of her leg amputated.
Zsa Zsa Gabor was hospitalized over the weekend to potentially have surgery to have a part of her right leg amputated after it turned gangrenous. A lesion that had been on her leg grew from just over an inch to about a foot in length, according to her publicist, John Blanchette. The publicist also noted, "They're going to have to amputate part of her leg. They said if they didn't, she could lose her life." Blanchette also said that the amputation would be below the knee. Though the amputation was not a definite measure as of late last night, it seems imminent.

Gabor was taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and prepped for surgery on Sunday night. The 93-year-old former actress was accompanied by her husband, Prince Frederic von Anhalt. Gabor had surgery last July to replace a broken hip, and had been in the hospital several times thereafter with swelling in her legs and blood clots in various parts of her body. She also had been in a car accident and suffered a stroke in the earlier part of the last decade, leaving her largely house-bound.

The car accident, which occurred in 2002, left Gabor partially paralyzed, and she was relegated to a wheelchair thereafter. After the accident and subsequent stroke in 2005, Gabor removed herself from the spotlight and stayed home to watch television and old movies. She reportedly hated having her photo taken after she had to remain in a wheelchair. Noted her husband, "She wants people to remember her as she was years ago." Though Gabor was an actress and sex symbol in the 1950s and 60s, her role in later life was simply to appear as a guest on various television specials and game shows, where her celebrity added sparkle to whatever she was involved with.
