Zinc Oxide Uses

Zinc oxide is an inorganic compound, that occurs in the Earth's crust as a mineral, known as zincite. However, it is basically synthesized artificially to meet most of its commercial demand. It is a white powdery substance, that is nearly insoluble in both water and alcohol, but soluble in most of the acids including hydrochloric acid. It is known to react strongly with aluminum and magnesium powder. Another interesting property of this inorganic compound is that it can absorb ultraviolet radiation. It is also known for its binding, luminescence, high thermal conductivity and antibacterial properties.

Importance of Zinc Oxide

In modern times, it has found numerous applications. It has found several important uses in industrial, medical as well as cosmetic industry which are explained below.

Industrial Uses of Zinc Oxide
This compound is used in rubber manufacturing. It is mainly used to activate vulcanization in order to improve the strength and elasticity of rubber. It is also used in concrete manufacturing as it helps to make the concrete more resistant against water, besides improving the processing time required. Another significant use of this inorganic compound is as cigarette filter. As a cigarette filter, it helps to remove certain harmful compounds from the tobacco smoke, without altering its flavor. In addition to these, some other uses include manufacturing of paints, anti corrosive coatings, lubricants, adhesive, batteries, fire retardants, sealants, plastics, ceramics, cement and glass.

Medical Uses of Zinc Oxide
As mentioned already, it has antibacterial properties, for which it is extensively used to treat a number of skin conditions. It is topically used to provide relief in skin irritation, diaper rash, minor burns, cuts and for dry and chapped skin. It is added to baby powder, anti-dandruff shampoos as well as antiseptic creams and surgical tapes due to its medicinal properties. Along with iron oxide, it is used to make calamine lotion. On the other hand, it is mixed with eugenol to form zinc oxide eugenol, which in turn, is used in dentistry for restorative and prosthodontic applications.

The ability to treat itching and skin irritation has made it an important ingredient in many rectal suppositories, used to relieve irritation and discomfort caused by hemorrhoids. Apart from these, it is also the source of the mineral nutrient, zinc which is required for carrying out a wide range of vital biochemical reactions within human body. It is added in dietary or vitamin supplements and some food products, as a source of zinc. Zinc ensures a healthy immune system and takes part in DNA synthesis as well.

Cosmetic Uses of Zinc Oxide
It is used in the preparation of sunscreen lotion in the cosmetic industry. It can absorb ultraviolet radiation of sun and thereby, protect the skin from sunburn and other damaging effects of UV radiation. Being the absorber of the broadest spectrum of ultraviolet radiation, it has been approved by the FDA to be used in sunscreen lotion and creams. It is also used in mineral makeup, deodorants and soaps.

One should be a bit careful while using zinc oxide or its preparations topically. It is generally not advisable to use this medication for severe burns and wounds. One should also take care that it does not get into the mouth and eyes while using it topically. Another important fact that inhalation of its fumes is highly hazardous, though zinc oxide itself is not toxic.
