Xperia PLAY Phone

Have you heard about the new Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY - a smartphone which doubles up as a gaming console and promises to bring about a revolution in the gaming arena? Read on...
Nobody needs an introduction to Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) or Sony Ericsson Xperia. While the former is the brainchild of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI), a full subsidiary of Sony Corporation, the latter is the product of the joint venture between Sony Corporation and the Swedish telecommunications' company Ericsson. Both these entities have come together to develop a brand new smartphone which doubles up as a portable video game console - a PSP phone to be precise. Codenamed Zeus, the new Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY has lately become the talk of the town - or should we say talk of the gaming arena.

Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY

Initially thought to be a PlayStation brand phone, the much hyped device will actually be launched as a Sony Ericsson phone - named Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY, as a part of the Xperia smartphone series. However, it will be a part of the PlayStation certified program which, in turn, means that you will be able to play PlayStation Suite games on it. Basically, PlayStation Suite is a software framework which changes the interface of the device from phone to XrossMediaBar that resembles the PSP. Rumors about a PlayStation phone and Sony Next Generation Portable started surfacing back in 2010 - with several publications coming up with the news of Sony coming up with a new gadget which will be a phone as well as PlayStation Portable game console. Finally, we have reached a point wherein this PlayStation phone is just a couple of months away - with a different brand name though.

Technical Specifications

A part of the Xperia smartphone series, Sony Ericsson Xperia Play will run on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) software. It will sport a 4-inch multi-touch 854 x 480 LCD which is believed to be powered by a Bravia engine to facilitate better video playback on the device. This PSP phone sports a 512 MB of RAM, 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8255 CPU and an Adreno 205 GPU - all of which will work together to make sure that you get amazing speed along with excellent graphics. Other than the 512 MB storage, Xperia Play also has microSD card support. The lone connectivity option in form of microUSB 2.0 doesn't sound quite promising though. The gaming phone also boasts of 5 megapixel camera which seems to be quite remarkable in itself.

Xperia PLAY Release

Over the last month or so, the rumors about the release of Xperia PLAY have become even more prominent, and that is perhaps the most evident reason for us to believe that its release date is just round the corner. Insiders suggest that Xperia Play is expected to be unveiled officially at the Mobile World Congress 2011 which is scheduled to be held between 14th and 17th February. If that's the case, it will surely hit the stores by March 2011.

With most of this information depending on rumors and speculations, it is very difficult to say how this device will fare at the end of the day. We will have to wait for a few more months to get the answers to numerous questions about this gadget - most of which will revolve around its compatibility to PSP games and PSP downloads as well as price. But you need not worry about the same, as we will make sure that we have the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY review ready for you the moment it hits the stores.
