Writing a Best Man's Speech

A quick guide to writing a best man's speech
The role of best man at a wedding comes with the expectation of an entertaining and witty speech. It can be a daunting task to write a speech so here is a step by step guide to help you. Whether you are familiar with public speaking or not it is a good idea to have a speech ready that is written down and rehearsed. If you are familiar with what you are going to say you will have a better chance of delivering it in a more relaxed and easy manner.

You want to make sure you cover the basics that are required of you. Make sure to raise a toast to the bridesmaids and the Maid of Honour. The tone of the speech depends on a few different things such as your closeness to the bride and groom and their sense of humour. That's something for you to work out but if on doubt err on the side of caution and keep things tame.

How you structure your speech is a matter of preference but here is a sample.

Open with a welcome to everyone and a quick joke to loosen people up. It's probably best to start with one that's not too close to the bone but that depends on how well you know your audience. Next give a brief explanation of your relationship to the groom along with a bit of history. You can put in any amusing stories you have about the two of you at this point. Then go for a short history of some of the grooms achievements as well as some of his best moments from a comedy point of view. You can then go and add a bit about the bride, how she met the groom and share any stories you have about the two of them. Be sure to add in some good heartfelt stories about the happy couple.

Finish with a toast to the bride and groom and your best man's speech is done.
