Writing Personalized Wedding Vows: Tips
First and foremost, let me tell you - there is no predefined way and there are no said rules or regulations about how a wedding vow should be written, or how it should not be written. Although wedding vows are important in terms of wedding planning, I have seen several people getting flummoxed at the thought of writing their wedding vows. Wake up guys! A wedding vow is not a job interview or a government tax to be worried about; it is simply a wedding tradition where you express your heartfelt feelings to the one you love before you are pronounced man and wife. Therefore, be as natural as possible. Let your thoughts flow. Don't restrict yourself to using formal or complicated language. Just say what you feel. Use simple words. If you are the type who cannot do any of this on the spur of the moment, do not fret. Plan your wedding vow well in advance. Use the following ideas and steps:
- Sit in a quiet place. It could be your room, atop a hill at sunset, or under the shade of a tree in a park. Close your eyes and picture your loved one. Think of all the things that you like about her. Think of how and why she makes you happy, makes you smile, and what it is about her that makes you love her so much.
- As you find yourself coming up with answers, jot down every single word that comes to mind. If you want, you can speak aloud and record all your thoughts into your mobile phone or a dictaphone.
- Write down all that you have learned from her, the qualities that you like about her the most, what are your thoughts about marriage, what marrying her means to you, what you look forward to in your married life, etc. If you are a poetic person, you could come up with a couple of lines to describe these things.
- Once the writer in you has penned down all his thoughts, it is time for you to play the role of an editor. You need to trim all your material to under a minute's length of speech. For good measure, take help of a sensible friend of the opposite gender during this process i.e., if you are a guy, have a sensible girl help you out and vice-versa. Once you have finished with the editing, read your final draft aloud a few times so that you get comfortable with it. If you wish to memorize it, go ahead and do so. Alternatively, you always have the option of reading it aloud at the wedding.
