Under eye wrinkles are one of the common characteristics of humans. If you notice carefully, even small children have wrinkles under eyes. Aging is not the only reason to be blamed for their development, as there are several other factors that are responsible too. Wrinkles are an indication of the skin losing its elasticity and inability of retaining its original shape. This becomes worse when we age and over time, the collagen level of the skin decreases and so does the elastic quality of the skin. Collagen keeps the skin from developing wrinkles when a person is young.

What Causes Wrinkles?

Apart from normal aging, here are some factors which may cause wrinkles too soon:
  • Prolong exposure to sunlight
  • Prolong smoking
  • Facial expressions repeated over time
  • Nutritional deficiencies
How to Deal with Wrinkles and Fine Lines Under Eyes

# Too much exposure to the sun causes wrinkles under your eyes. When out in bright sunlight, it is a natural trait for people to squint in an attempt to avoid the sun's rays. What most people are unaware of, is that squinting is also responsible for causing under eye wrinkles, and that round the eyes also. So get a pair of sunglasses that can protect your eyes from bright sunlight and UV rays.

# Skin that is poorly hydrated, stays vulnerable to develop wrinkles and dark circles under eyes. Drinking plenty of water is a simple treatment for it. After waking up and having washed your face in the morning, drinking 2-3 glasses of water on an empty stomach not only helps in revitalizing the skin, but also helps in bowel movement. Initially, you might feel uncomfortable in drinking water on an empty stomach, but gradually, you will get used to it. You can also add a squirt of lemon to the water to make it taste better.

# If you do not like gulping lots of water then you may surely like 'eating it'! Have fruits such as watermelons, cucumbers and others that have a rich water-content. They also keep your body well hydrated and toxin free. Cucumbers can also be used externally in order to treat wrinkles. Cut some fresh slices of the fruit and place them on the eyelids and lie down for about 20-30 minutes. Enjoy the cool and soothing feeling of the fruit and see the reduction of the wrinkles under your eyes.

# Prolong working with computers is also one cause of premature development of wrinkles. If your job involves working with computers, then try to rest your eyes as often as possible. Take a break every hour and close your eyes and relax for a minute or so. You can also cast your eyes to the farthest object that you can see, but take care not to strain the eyes. This method helps the muscles of the eyes to relax and reduces chances of developing wrinkles.

# Drinking excessive alcohol, caffeine and smoking are directly related to the development of dark circles and wrinkle formation under eyes. So, needless to state, quitting smoking and keeping drinking to a moderate level, would definitely help.

Medical Treatment

# Topical retinoids such as Tretinoin (Renova, Retin-A) and tazarotene (Avage, Tazorac) are known for their effectiveness in reducing wrinkles and fine lines thus, improving the skin's appearance. However, it is advisable that the use of these medications must be combined with an application of sunscreen, and use of proper clotting for protection against the sun's rays.

# Some people also opt for over-the-counter anti-wrinkles creams. However, given their low concentration of the active ingredients which help in reducing wrinkles, they provide minimal benefits as compared to prescription medications.

# Surgery could also be an option for people who may not benefit from conservative treatment. Surgical options are many, and each one of them work in a different manner, having its own potential benefits and side effects too. So discussing with an expert on such matters may help one to get the most suitable treatment for his/her skin type.

For people who lament over their wrinkles every time they see themselves in the mirror, the best cure for their wrinkles is to reduce their formation and improve the look and health of their skin. For those who are in their early 20s, they can start following all such preventive measures that have been described and push the onset to wrinkles. Following a healthy diet and refraining from all kinds of processed or fast foods have also been found to play a vital role in preventing and reducing wrinkles under eyes. Eat healthy, stay healthy and look young and beautiful!
