The first step for you is obviously to eat right. You cannot be spending hours doing abdominal exercises and then rendering all that work useless by eating junk food and unhealthy food. Eat a balanced diet before you set out on exercising your abs. This tip will serve you well, and the ignorance of this will result in you having to work twice as hard to get that six-pack. If there is something worse than not working out, it is working out incorrectly. This carries a risk of serious injuries, wastes a lot of energy and gives you false hope. Abdominal Muscles Explained
Simply doing stomach crunches or leg lifts is not going to result in you getting toned abs. Most people have the misconception that just these two exercises are sufficient. Working on the inner layer of the abdominal muscles is just as important as working on the outer layer. There are two layers in the deeper abdominal area, namely the rectus abdominus and the transverse abdominus.
The first muscle group (rectus abdominus) is responsible for pulling your pelvis area up to your belly button, and the second muscle group (transverse abdominus) is responsible for pulling the belly button area towards your stomach. The workouts for lower abdomen affect both these muscle groups, and it is impossible to achieve six pack abs if you ignore either one of these muscle groups. Also read further on the following. Leg Lifts
This is the most basic of all the workouts for lower abs for men and women. You need to lie down on a flat surface, and place your arms on your side. Tighten your abdominal muscles, control your breathing and lift both your legs up off the ground, till they are perpendicular to the ground. Keep them there for a few seconds. Then gently lower them back onto the ground. Start off with sets of 10 - 15 repetitions and perform 2 - 3 sets at a time. As you progress and your abs get stronger, you can increase the number of repetitions per set.
Alternate Leg Walk
This exercise is very similar to leg lifts. You need to position yourself in a similar manner as before and then proceed. Now lift your legs together till they are at an angle of 45 degrees to the ground. Now gently lower one leg towards the ground, but make sure not to let that leg rest on the ground. In the meantime the other leg must remain as it was. Now get the leg you moved back up and move the second leg towards the ground. Set the number of repetitions for yourself depending on how long you can continue this procedure. Remember to time your breathing to perfection.
Leg Circles
This is another one of the best workouts for lower abs for women and men, that you will come across on many occasions. You must lie down on a flat surface for this exercise as well. Place your hands under your lower back or your butt. Now you need to lift your legs up to a 90 degree angle (just like you did for the leg lifts exercise) and rotate both your legs together in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction. As you feel your abs getting stronger, you can increase the number of circles you make. It is also beneficial if you alternate the circles between clockwise and anti-clockwise directions. Crunches
This is a classic exercise for working out the abdominal muscles of a person. Again, you need to lie on a flat surface on your back. Bend your knees so that the soles of your feet are firmly on the ground. Now raise your head towards your knees, with your hands behind your head. Once your forehead touches your knees, go back slowly to your old position. Perform around 20 - 25 repetitions and increase this number as you progress further.
