Carolyn Bovey of Bradenton, Florida, told authorities that the breakfast she purchased at the McDonald’s drive-through Wednesday morning was definitely not a happy meal.

Bovey, 54, said that she had gone through the drive-through of a Bradenton McDonald’s and ordered a sausage, egg, and cheese McMuffin. When she got to work, she unwrapped the sandwich and took a bite. That was when, according to police reports, Bovey allegedly found a razor blade in the eggs.

One of the managers at the McDonald’s where Bovey bought her breakfast told police that the restaurant does use razor blades, but it was unclear what they use them for. It was also not known whether the restaurant’s razor blades are the same type that Bovey says was in her McMuffin.

Sgt. Mike Kenyan of the Manatee County Sheriff's Office said that he did find a razor blade in a manager’s desk that looks like the one Bovey found in her sandwich, but he didn’t say whether it was an exact match. A spokeswoman for McDonald’s said that she doesn’t know why a loose razor blade would be in the restaurant. The manager of the store told authorities that the only way Bovey could have found one in her sandwich was if a blade was on the shelf above the cooking area and it fell in accidentally.

Why would anything like this be near a food preparation area?" Bovey told reporters. "That almost made me feel worse, that something like this could happen by accident. This should never have happened."

Restaurant owner Cynthia Kennedy issued a statement to advise the public against rushing to judgment before all the facts are in. "Absolutely nothing if more important to me than operating safe restaurants," Kennedy said. "We take great pride in the food we serve our customers and set rigorous standards for food and restaurant safety. We strongly caution anyone from jumping to conclusions without having all the facts." Kennedy added that the restaurant is cooperating fully with the sheriff’s office in their investigation.

Bovey, who originally told police she was not injured, later said that she feels like she slightly cut her lip, so she’s talking to attorneys.
