Wolverine Tops Weekend Box Office Despite Online Leak

Hugh Jackman's Wolverine brings in $87 million in its first weekend, even though a pirated version of the film has been available online for weeks.
The opening weekend for Wolverine was strong enough to beat out the premiere weekends of the first two X-Men films, but not quite the third. And although 20th Century Fox has been quick to point out that the leaked version was incomplete and unpolished, it has been a mainstay on many of the file sharing websites that have been a thorn in the side of the movie industry for years.

Of course, now that the actual film has been released, it should only be a matter of hours before a complete and polished version is available for download from the same file-sharing sites.

Hugh Jackman held up his end of the bargain from a promotional standpoint, as he was busy with a media blitz right up through the opening weekend. Jackman made appearances on Howard Stern, Good Morning America and all the major talk shows as the anticipation built for the opening of the film.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine tracks the origin of the most popular character of the X-Men franchise, including explanations of how he came to have his razor-sharp claws and why his skeleton is encased in an indestructible extra-terrestrial metal.

The success of Wolverine is likely propel the next phase of the X-Men franchise and it will be interesting to see the string of movies that may follow.
