Wireless Mouse not Working

A common complaint that most computer users regularly highlight is that of their wireless mouse suddenly stops working properly. Compared to the earlier models of ball bearing mice we used, a wireless computer mouse has really revolutionized the ability to maneuver the cursor on our screen. No more worrying about entangled wires, malfunctioning of the ball inside the mouse, loose connections and whatnot. But with this new advanced invention, some new problems have also arisen.

These problems can occur due to a variety of reasons, owing to the complex electronics in the machine that make it work. Any small damage inside the mouse can have some major effects on its performance, and a malfunctioning mouse can be extremely annoying and truly frustrating for any person. A wireless mouse that isn't properly, will usually show the following symptoms.

• The pointer does not move the way you want, it moves erratically and unpredictably instead.
• When you move the mouse, the pointer does not move at all.
• There is absolutely no response when you click a button on the pointer.
• The 'Control Panel' contains some tabs in the 'Mouse Items' option. If these are not showing up, may be it is because of some defect in the mouse.
• Windows is unable to detect the presence of the mouse, even if you disconnect and reconnect it.

Any or all of these signs are a clear indicator that your mouse isn't working.

Problems With Wireless Mouse
These problems can range from simple hardware defects, to complex software incompatibility. Either cause can result in the mouse not functioning properly. Given here are some of the most commonly seen and diagnosed causes for these problems.

• One of the simplest reasons is that the batteries in it could be depleted. This will obviously hamper the usability and functionality of the device, and the only solution to this is to replace the old batteries. Ensure that the batteries are placed in the correct position, in most cases, this should solve your problem.
• Sometimes there can be no discernible cause for this problem. One should attempt using the mouse with a different computer to check if there is something wrong with the mouse or not.
• The wireless mouse comes with a receiver that must be connected into a USB port on the computer. It can so happen that the USB port, itself, is not functioning. A possible solution to this is to connect the receiver to another USB port, and then attempt to use the mouse. It is advisable to connect the receiver to a USB port on the back of the computer, as these ports are usually assigned more bandwidth, or more power.
• Also ensure that the receiver is connected directly to the port itself, and not to a USB hub, a port replicator, or a KVM switch.
• Sometimes, when there is an object lying between the receiver and the mouse, the wireless mouse may stop working. Such items could be cell phones, remotes, cameras, radios, wireless routers, desktop fans, large metal cases, or other such devices. Move these devices out of the way to fix the problem.
• Some mouse related software that has been installed in the past may conflict with the device and this may cause it to malfunction. You must remove such conflicting software.
• Many times the installation software may not have occurred properly. To make sure that this is not the cause, reinstall the software on your computer.
• If all else fails, you should call up the person you bought the mouse from, customer care service in case of a company, or a computer repair store, and ask them to have a look at it and fix it.

As you can see, there are many different reasons for your wireless mouse not working. Most of these reasons can be fixed easily though, and do not require much hassle and effort. For a person accustomed with computers and electronics, none of these solutions should be too hard to administer.
