Winter Soul

A poem about loneliness and rebirth, fear and acceptance, heartache and joy…
I stare up at the ice encrusted tree limbs,
barren and frigid.
The sight resonates within my soul,
for it is the state of my heart.
I walk across the frozen lawn,
my footsteps crunching in the freezing snow.
Every step I take,
I hear the sound of my heart breaking.
I stop at the edge of the ice covered lake,
watching my reflection.
It feels like reality,
the image staring back at me.
I walk backwards several feet, take a deep breath.
With a primal scream, I race to the edge.
taking the leap that will end my misery,
I smile for the first time.
Ice shatters, pure coldness seeps into my soul.
Surrounded by water, covered with Ice
my heart stops.
It is over.
Heart kicks in my chest, I am drawn to the surface.
I inhale cool air.
Coughing, gasping, I take in the beautiful winter day.
I climb from the bank of the lake,
cleansed.
