The Pilates Method A Basic Approach
This article takes a basic approach at explaining the Pilates method designed by Mari Winsor Pilates.
The Method Pilates, also known as the Method or Pilates Method, has long been described by many experts and professionals as the perfect exercise system. But, what really is the reason behind this description?
There are more than 500 exercises involved in the Pilates Method. However, these Pilates method exercises can be divided into two categories. The first are those exercises which are done on the floor mat, also known as mat work. And, the second are those that involve equipment, such as barrel, Cadillac, reformer and the chair. Although they differ primarily on application, both categories of the Pilates Method exercise were developed around the same basic principles and they both involve similar kinds of bodily movement.
Every human body has certain imbalances that can be realigned through the Method Pilates. In some cases, these imbalances caused from injury may need rehabilitation, and the perfect solution of the Method. Note that the Method is different from most of the physical therapy for the reason that it strengthens the entire body, not just the injured or imbalanced parts. Perhaps one particular support for this is that during the early days of the Method Pilates, most of the famous choreographers sent their ballet dancers to Joseph Pilates for rehabilitation from their injuries. Then, they found out that the downtime from an injury was less than half resulting from the continued overall body conditioning.
Many people these days have bad posture. Basically, the problem with body posture is that the body is thrown out of alignment resulting in pressure on ligaments, tendons, muscles and joints in ways that may cause chronic disorders. The Method Pilates can be used to improve the posture by correcting the alignment, making the person looks tall and long, slimmer and more confident. Note that standing up tall and straight can completely change the persons appearance.
The Pilates Method exercise are said to be gentle enough to be done during pregnancy. However, it is worth noting that the exercises are sophisticated enough to challenge the very fit. On their most basic, the Pilates Method exercise has appropriate modifications. As often noted, the approach is about quality of movements and not about quantity. Note that most of the recommended movements during the exercise are repeated ten times, while there are some of the more challenging movements that are repeated only three to four times. As a result, most participants are aware of the positive adjustments after ten sessions, at which point they do not have to think about choreography, but can focus entirely on themselves.
The Method Pilates, on its most basic, focuses on working and strengthening the small muscle groups, which are the intrinsic muscles. These small muscles are actually the ones responsible for the core support of the body. Note that most strengthening programs work primarily on the large muscle groups. But, on the Method Pilates, the small muscle groups are strengthened first in order to change the placement of the bones, which are the framework of the body. As these muscles strengthen, the impinged nerves, muscles and bones are released from being crammed together to a freedom in their range of motion. So, they can move freely.
Today, because of the Pilates Method exercises strong emphasis on strength and flexibility, the Pilates method exercises are so popular among many dancers, especially those who engaged in ballet dancing. Gymnasts, football players, and other athletes who want to focus on these aspects of exercise also consider the Pilates Method without any doubt.
