Types of Wine
It is a known fact that grapes are used to make wine. There are basically, two types of wines: red wine and white wine. As the name suggests, for manufacturing red wine, red grapes are used, but to make white wine, green grapes are used. So there is a slight difference in nutritional value between these two kinds of wines.
Nutritional Profile of Wine
Although a frequently consumed drink, very few people are aware about its nutritional value. Although wine provides health benefits, surprisingly its nutritional value is very low. Vitamins
A careful analysis has revealed that the only vitamin found in a glass of wine is riboflavin. This is one of the B vitamins and is also referred to as vitamin B2. Although vitamin B2 is present in wine, the quantity is negligible. A glass of wine contains just 0.01% of riboflavin.
Minerals
No mineral content, is one of the major drawbacks of most alcoholic beverages. As we all know, dietary mineral intake are essential for a healthy living, but minerals are totally absent in 3.5 oz of wine (103 g).
Proteins
Does red wine contains proteins? This is one question that is commonly asked by die-hard fans of red wine. Proteins are present in red wine but again the content is insignificant. 103 g of red wine has approximately 0.1 g of protein.
Calories
As alcohol content is high in red wine, calorie count is substantially high. So those asked to reduce calorie intake for weight loss, certainly cannot consume wine on a regular basis. This is because, a glass of red wine contains as many as 110 calories.
Carbohydrates
Most of the calories come from carbohydrates, as red wine is devoid of saturated fats.. It is observed that 5 oz of red wine will approximately have 2.4 g of carbohydrates.
Sugar
Not all varieties of wine contain sugar, however, the dessert wine, well know for its sweet taste has sugar in it. In dessert wine, sugar is added to enhance its taste. However, the usually served red wine, also has some amount of sweetness due to the presence of grapes. Therefore it is found that a glass of usual red wine contains 0.8 g of sugar.
Nutritional Content of White Wine
Well, drinking a glass of white wine means you consume approximately 1.14 g of carbohydrates, 96 calories and 0.14 grams of proteins. The sodium content is found to be 7 mg in a serving of white wine.
It might be slightly disappointing to know the nutritional content of red wine. However, one plus point of this alcoholic beverage is that it is absolutely devoid of saturated fats. Also, as the cholesterol count is zero in a glass of red wine, there is no question of raised cholesterol levels due to its consumption. Most importantly, red wine contains flavonoids that can help to lower bad cholesterol levels, in turn promoting a healthy heart.
