Wimbledon 2010: Day 9 Results

The biggest upset of the Wimbledon 2010 occurred on Day 9, when defending champion and 6 time Wimbledon winner Roger Federer lost to Tomas Berdych...
With the 5 time women's champion Venus Williams losing in the quarterfinals yesterday, today it was the turn of another great champion to bow out of the Wimbledon 2010 championships. Roger Federer, the 6 time Wimbledon champion, lost to 12th seed Tomas Berdych and will not be playing in the Wimbledon final for the first time in 6 years. It was a shock defeat, though many claimed that they saw it coming, and to be honest, Federer has not had the usual form he has while paying Grand Slams. He scraped through the first round, attributing his way in the 2nd round to luck, something he never does. In his second round too he needed 4 sets to get rid of a qualifier. While the 3rd and 4th round matches were more satisfactory, it was only a matter of time till someone came along to beat him. And on Wednesday that someone came in the form of Tomas Berdych. Berdych has been playing incredible tennis and deserved to win. At the end of the day, Berdych was by far the better player on court. Federer, however, attributed his loss here to injury, claiming he was suffering from back and leg problems. While this is again unusual for the champion, both the injury and his blaming the loss on it, he also mentioned that he would come back stronger. Well, his fans will surely hope so.

Men's Results Quarterfinal

Besides the Federer Berdych match, there were 3 other quarterfinals played, and thankfully there were no upsets in those matches, making it an all seeded affair in the semifinals. The number 2, 3, and 4 seed all made to the last 4, and had Roger Federer won today, it would have been the perfect 4 in the semis. However, the number 12 seed Tomas Berdych spoiled the party, and is the other seed in the last 4. The number 2 seed , Rafael Nadal had a spot of bother in the first set, and was 0-5 down. He eventually lost the set 6-3, but came back strongly to take the next 3 sets comfortably and put yet another end to Robin Soderling's Grand Slam campaign. The 3rd seed Novak Djokovic got the better of Yen-Hsun Lu, the 82 ranked player who defeated Andy Roddick to set up a clash with Djokovic. The toll of defeating Roddick, however, which went to 5 tough sets, was too great, and Yen-Hsun Lu eventually lost tamely in 3 sets. Tsonga and Murray played it out in the last quarterfinal, and though Tsonga started off well, he was unable to keep the momentum and lost in 4 sets. Incidentally, this 4 set victory for Andy Murray means that this is the 1st set that he has dropped in the Wimbledon 2010.

Wimbledon Day 10 Schedule

The men will get a rest on day 10, before playing their semifinal matches on Day 11, leaving day 10 wide open for the ladies. Both the ladies semifinals will be played on day 10, and both matches are interesting match ups. The men's doubles event has also reached the semifinal stage, and the first of the semis will be played on day 10. Here is what the schedule on day 10 of Wimbledon 2010 looks like.

So that's it on day 9 of the Wimbledon 2010, which is gearing up for a very exciting finish indeed. Can an unseeded woman take the 2010 title? Or will it be the Serena Williams dominance again? The Williams sisters have been knocked out of the doubles event, and with sister Venus also out of the singles event, the pressure must be high of Serena to win the singles. Can she do it? Can she defend her title? Her step to the final may not seem difficult given the fact that she is playing an unseeded player, but Petra Kvitova is a tough player and Serena will have to fight it out to get to the final. An exciting day 10 in store for tennis fans tomorrow...don't miss it.

To end, here is sad news indeed for champion Roger Federer and the millions and millions of Roger Federer fans. After his quarterfinal loss in the French Open 2010, Federer slipped from number 1 to number 2, and now after his quarterfinal loss in the Wimbledon 2010, he has further slipped to number 3. When the new rankings come out on Monday, Novak Djokovic will be the new number 2, while Federer will slip to number 3, the first time in more than 300 weeks outside the top 2. Sad news indeed, but Federer thinks he can make it back to the top. As Federer fans, we can only but hope that he does exactly that, and soon.
