Wimbledon 2010 Seeds
Wimbledon 2010 gets underway, barely 2 weeks after the mentally and physically tiring French Open. Let's take a look at the men's and women's seeding for one of the most prestigious Grand Slams on the tour...

The Championships, as it is officially called, gets underway on June 21st, with the top seed and defending champion opening proceedings. Unlike other tournaments and Grand Slams, the seeding for Wimbledon is done on performance and not according to the South African Airways ATP Rankings or the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Rankings. This ensures that the best players at Wimbledon are seeded higher, consequently resulting in better play as the tournament progresses. Let's take a look at the men's and women's seeds for Wimbledon 2010.

As seen above, there is quite a bit of deviation from the South African Airways ATP Rankings and the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Rankings. Most notable among the men is the number 1 seed, Roger Federer, who is seeded first, though he is number 2 in the rankings. Hewitt too, after his incredible performance, is seeded 15th compared to his 26th place in the rankings. In the women's section, the most notable beneficiaries are Francesca Schiavone, who is ranked 6th but seeded 5th. Everyone else too moves up a spot in the seeds, but that is due to the probable absence of Elena Dementieva, who is not playing the Wimbledon 2010 due to injury.
Favorites to Win Wimbledon 2010
Now this is the million dollar question. In the men's section, there are quite a few contenders, starting with the top seed and defending champion. Since Federer has won 6 titles here, he remains the favorite to win the 2010 edition of Wimbledon. But given his rather dismal form lately, there are many others who are just waiting for the champion to falter. Nadal has overtaken Federer in the rankings, and will be all set to ruin Federer's chance of equaling Sampras' record of 7 Wimbledon titles. Then there is Djokovic, Murray, Roddick, and Soderling, who have all proved that they can win a slam defeating the best players. There is also Hewitt, Tsonga, Cilic, Berdych, who all stand a chance to win the title. It's going to be one hell of a Wimbledon 2010.
In the women's section, the favorite is Serena Williams, the number one seed and defending champion. After defeating her sister in the 2009 Wimbledon final, she is all set to lift another trophy at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. In her way are Venus Williams, Wozniacki, Jankovic, Francesca Schiavone, and Samantha Stosur. Outside chances exist for Clijsters, Henin, Sharapova and Petrova. The women's section looks more sedate and I think that it will be one of the Williams Sisters who will lift the trophy.
All this just promises one thing. An absolutely action packed Wimbledon 2010. With the draw coming out on Friday, it will be interesting to see where these potential champions are placed. As always, stay tuned.
