Why The Best Mexico Auto Insurance Policy Is Not Always Available
There is a HUGE difference between old fashioned paper generated policies and the kinds of electronic policies purchased across the World Wide Web.
Paper policies are done in the traditional way by agents in small insurance offices and mailed to Mexican through the regular snail mail postal system.
In other words, the agent fills out all the paperwork manually, goes to the post office and mails your policy to Mexico. Many agents in order to minimize costs, don't mail anything until they can send 5 or 6 policies at one time. So your policy may be delayed for a few days.
Then your policy goes through customs and to Mexico City to one of the major insurers. Once received, the policies are then processed and entered one at a time into a database connected to a master computer.
The question is, what happens if you have an accident & the insurance company doesn't have evidence of your policy? What happens if you have an accident on a weekend when almost all insurance agent offices are closed and the ONLY company available to respond is your insurance company?
In the US and Canada the law is administered following English Common Law. In Mexico the law is administered based on the Napoleonic Code.
So, in Mexico, you are generally viewed as guilty unless and until you can prove you are innocent. Any car accident is considered a felony in Mexico and the police will jail you unless you can show them your valid Mexican insurance card or pay whatever they say are the damages by cash or check right then and there, they will hold you until you do.
Unfortunately, the policies of the United States and Canada are not honored in Mexico. The importance of your insurer to confirm your coverage in a quick manner is vital, as the Mexican police will hold you and possibly confiscate your vehicle until you provide evidence that you can pay for any damages they say you have caused.
An electronically created Mexican Car Insurance policy is made available to the personnel working in the insurance claims department 24 hours a day and is downloadable for their verification systems within minutes. This process permits a speedy response and verification so you can continue to enjoy your trip.
