Why Installing Security Lighting Is a Good Idea

A look at how security lights work and why they are a good home security measure for protecting your family.
Home security is something we all know we should pay attention to, but that we don’t always think about. Sometimes we don’t pay attention at all until it’s too late. Security is important, not only after your home has been broken into, but to prevent it from happening in the first place.

Proper security lighting can go a long ways toward keeping your home safe, even if you’re not interested in investing in a full-fledged alarm system at this time.

Any kind of outdoor light that is turned on at night can be considered a good security measure. Why? Because burglars don’t want to work where they may be spotted. They prefer dark yards with lots of shadowy nooks where they can hide as they advance upon the house and break their way inside.

However, most of us don’t want to keep the outdoor lights on all night. This is a waste of energy (which costs us money), and you probably don’t want light shining into your bedroom while you’re trying to sleep (and even if it doesn’t bug you, your neighbors might object).

That’s why most security lighting is designed to come on only if someone is detected approaching your yard. These lights operate by using sensors to tell them when to turn on.

There are two kinds of sensors that are used in residential security lights: microwave and infrared.

Microwave sensors send out very high frequency radio waves. They are able to tell when someone has come into range, because the entry of a person or object disrupts the radio waves. When the disruption is sensed, this triggers the light to turn on. (Though they are called "microwave" sensors, there is no sort of damage done to anyone walking through the waves.)

Infrared is the other type of sensor. These respond to heat. When they sense a warm object (such as a person or a car) entering within their range, the sensor will trigger the light to turn on.

With both types of sensors, the lights will turn off again after a preset amount of time. This allows you to scare away potential burglars, and it also allows you to save energy. You won’t have to spend much extra money on your monthly electricity bills because the lights aren’t turned on all night.

Automatic security lights can also be convenient just for your every day use. Instead of having to leave the porch light on because someone is expected to come home from work after dark, you don’t have to worry about the lights at all. When your family member drives up to the house, the lights will turn on automatically.

As you can see this is a smart technology to use for home security and also the overall safety of your home. You can purchase security lights at any major home and garden store or hardware store, and they are relatively inexpensive (at least compared to big fancy alarm systems) and not hard to install.
