Why Don't all Braces Cost the Same?

It's no big secret that braces cost quite a bit. Here's a look at why braces don't cost the same.
Typically, braces cost a seemingly exorbitant amount, falling between $5000 and $9000, throwing service fees into the equation. Doesn't come as a surprise to anyone, really, as we all know they are traditionally a high-ticket item. But why does such a disparity exist in the first place?

As it turns out, teeth are a family legacy. They also have the effect of weighing quite heavily on the other family legacy, the money. It's rare that only one child in a family will need to have braces, and the parents of big broods might expect to have to dip into the cookie jar more than once over the years. It all adds up, and in this case, can add up to quite a bit.

Unfortunately as well, more than one dental problem will often act to compound the costs implied in fixing them. Crooked teeth and a misaligned jaw are separate problems, but dentists generally will insist on treating them together, greatly increasing the price.

Something to keep in mind is that, even if coming from the same confectioner, braces often differ in cost depending on model, size and numerous other factors. You want to shop around for a good orthodontist too. Don't make the mistake of just jumping on with the first one you meet. Each will likely offer a different deal.

How can the orthodontist fees be so different? Again, there are a lot of factors to consider. First and foremost, over head costs go a long way to increasing a final bill. If the dentist hires their own dental technicians, it is much cheaper for them, and thus for you, than outsourcing. This is because the dental techs are the ones that do all of the manual part that go into putting together your braces. If the techs are indeed employees of the dentist, you may expect a bit of a break on the price of the braces.

The braces themselves come in a variety of different materials, and quite basically, some more expensive than others. A traditional metal apparatus, the one we've all come to love so, so much, is cheaper than Invisalign invisible braces, for example. Sure, the invisible braces might be easier to manufacture, but the materials still cost a bundle, and that's where a very big chunk of the cost for braces comes from.

Also, the invisible braces are just more difficult to put into place and eventually work on when you make your regular visits to the dentist's office. Of course, this will cost you a little more. Metal braces are visible. Anyone who remembers being lovingly referred to as "brace-face" when they were a child can tell you that. With the invisible braces, the patient keeps their winning smile, but ends up paying to be able to use it.

Contrary to popular belief, the invisible braces are able to correct the most crooked of smiles. The only real difficulty is to the pocket book. You can expect braces cost more if the problem is more severe.
