Why Do People Become Collectors?
Ultimately, you will get joy from collecting for two reasons only. You must appreciate the items you have already collected and you must enjoy the search for the items you want.
How to display your collectibles
Some collectors are happy to simply pack their collectibles in boxes and put them away. Others find interesting ways to work their collections into their everyday life. Many find that the greatest challenge is finding a way to display them in their home. Most discover that their collectibles are best displayed in one place rather than scattered in different places in the house.
If you place small collectibles on one solid flat surface, you will find that you get a very cluttered look. This includes dressers, side tables and desks. These are best displayed in a glass case or on a shelf on the wall so that they grab your attention as you walk by. A curio cabinet is always a good choice. An added benefit of a curio cabinet is that it is also good for protecting your collectibles from dirt, dust, and damage. Some collectibles require a special kind of display case. Examples of this type of item include thimbles, flags, baseballs, marbles, and matches. If you are really fortunate, you might even have a whole room dedicated to your collection. If you do not have the space to display every one of your collectibles at once, you might rotate the items in your collection so that each one can be enjoyed.
Things you should avoid when collecting
You must always practice financial responsibility when collecting. No matter how much you want that new item, you should never put it before paying your mortgage, bills, or putting money into savings. If you feel that you are obsessing over your collection, seek help. Being unable to stop buying items for your collection or having your collection interfere with your daily life are all signs of obsession. Keep your family first in your life. Your collection should never be a priority over your family.
Things to remember when collecting
Some collectors are intrigued by the challenge of collecting every item in a particular set. However, this is not always realistic. A good way to accomplish this is to narrow your collection down to one subset of the group of items you are interested in. Just because you are interested in a certain collection does not mean that someone else will be. Do not try to start a collection for them because they probably won’t keep it up.
If you get your seasonal, like Christmas, collections out a little earlier than the rest of the decorations you will have the pleasure of enjoying them longer. If an item does not appeal to you, do not collect it as an investment. The reason for this is simple. If you buy an item that is worth a lot of money, but that you do not particularly like, it may lose value at some point. If that happens, you will not only have a worthless item in your collection, but you will also have one that you do not like to look at.
Collecting can be a great hobby that offers many challenges or rewards. You will be able to accrue, display and show off your collection. The rewards are many, if you do it responsibly.
