Who's Afraid of the Dark? - The Third Part of Chapter 3
Third part of Chapter Three coming up.
"Sorry," I apologized, I shouldn't have let myself get so interested in him.
"That's fine. Remember when I said that you have to do everything I say exactly when I say it?"
"Yes..."
"Well I'll tell you why... hang on a minute you better get baby Ric before I tell you, it could take a while, but be quick this can't wait that long." he turned away from me and I knew I was free to go and retrieve Ric.
I came back to James's room to find him nowhere in sight. Baby Ric gargled in my arms and looked over my shoulder. I followed his gaze to the entrance to my room and saw James's leather jacket on the floor hanging out of the doorway. I stormed into my room intending to shout the odds at James for entering my room without my permission especially when I specifically told him to stay out of it, but when I opened the door James was not there. Instead of James an enormous wolf, with the same red eyes that the monster that had attacked the house last night had stood in the middle of the room. It looked at me as if it was an intelligent creature that knew exactly what I was thinking, kind of like James did. James. I started moving slowly backwards, Ric didn't seem to mind facing the wolf and possibly death but I certainly did. The wolf kept pursuing me and in my haste to exit the area, I tripped over the strewn leather jacket. Stupid mistake. The wolf was stood right next to me.
"James..." I breathed. The wolf gave a tiny nod before walking away. Then, right before my eyes, the wolf became human, an annoying human who was wearing a black shirt and combats. A human that had left his Jacket on the floor for me to trip over. I realized I was still sat on the floor. James quickly walked over to me and held out his hand for me to take. I did so, even if a little reluctantly. Miraculously Ric had landed in a sitting position and was laughing. I imagined him saying "Let's do it again," rather enthusiastically. Well at least someone was having fun. I was just confused.
"What the hell, YOU ATTACKED THE HOUSE LAST NIGHT!" I was screaming at James without even realizing it. Baby Ric seemed to take the hint that the atmosphere had changed substantially in last few seconds. He screwed up his face and began to brawl, James simply looked at me, as if I were to magically make him be quiet.
"No." he was firm when he spoke and for some reason I believed him completely "The people who are hunting me attacked your house last night, in the hope that I was here, luckily I was hunting in my wolf form at the time and was able to save you when you came home, I might add that you have the awfullest sense of timing of any person I was every had the great satisfaction of meeting," I was still processing the news that my house had been attacked by people that wanted James had desolated my house to be mad about the timing jibe.
"Well you have to leave then, I can't put Ric in that sort of danger," the choice was incredibly clear to me. James was leaving. Now.
"I wish I could, trust me I don't want to put you or Ric any sort of danger but the Reverend said that I have to stay here and protect you and of course Ric." I could tell that I was really starting to get to James.
"So, who cares what the Reverend says?" I asked, genuinely clueless.
"He's the head of the pack, the Alpha- Wolf. Whatever he says we do, it's a wolf thing okay?"
"So if he says go jump off a cliff, you have to?" I asked being deliberately awkward.
"Yes." he answered, a little too quickly. So it was definite then, no matter what I did James would stay. This could be fun, I thought to myself.
"Listen I know it's hard to process but you have to trust me from now on okay?" he was leaving the choice utterly up to me.
"Yes." I found myself saying to my incredulous disbelief.
"Good, hey are you gonna make Ric shut up?"
"And how do you suppose I do that?" I asked finding my sarcasm again.
"Give him to me." he didn't say it forcefully but I didn't really want to give Baby Ric to James. James leaned over and took Ric from me. Ric immediately shut up, he looked at James and then laughed. Laughed. He continued to laugh and James smiled as well.
"Hello Ric, what are you laughing at?" he was cooing at Ric. He didn't really expect Ric to answer him did he? It was like talking to brick wall when I next spoke.
"He's not going to answer you." I was ignored.
James walked out of my room, still carrying Ric.
"Where are you going?!" I shouted after James.
"I think I'll take Ric out for a walk, it isn't good for him to stay inside all day, where is his coat?"
"Over the end of his cot in his room, so you're just gonna leave me here alone? What if they come back, those people who are hunting you?" I knew I was getting frantic over something that probably wouldn't happen but I really didn't want to risk it.
"Good point, get your coat." not what I wanted to happen yet I compelled and went to retrieve my coat from the hook in the lobby downstairs. When I reached the door, James was already there, with Ric in him Pram.
"I'll push him," I said not wanting to let James do everything, Ric was my little brother.
"Ok," he was humoring me and I didn't like it. We set off at a steady pace down the driveway to the grand old house. When we reached the bottom I suggested that we go left, towards the lake as it was a more scenic route. Well that was what I told him, really it was to get us away from the prying eye of the village, I didn't want to imagine what people would think of me and James with Ric. James however had other ideas.
"I need to see Reverend Thomas," he took the buggy away from me and began to push it Right, towards the main village. I considered just staying put but then thought of Ric all alone and defenseless with James. I followed. We arrived at the chapel in the main village five minutes later and, mercifully, no one was about.
Reverend Thomas promptly opened the door at the sound of James' knock.
"Hello James, does she know," well he didn't waste any time.
"Yes, but she didn't want to come here today, she values her reputation in the eyes of others from the village too much for her own good, and she doesn't trust me either." replied James with a quirky smile playing on his lips.
"That will all change in time, remember the prophecy said she would be difficult at the beginning." the Reverend smiled at some kind of inside joke and James joined him.
"Well come inside then, it's not safe to be hanging around outside at dusk." the reverend stepped inside the door and let us past. The only time I had ever been to church was at Christmas time for the annual service and I had to admit it had looked beautiful then, but that was nothing compared to how it looked now. There must have been two hundred white and red candles lining the alter at the front of the church and no other light was on. The warm glow, the candles gave the empty, ancient room made me gasp in disbelief. Four men turned and stared at James and the Reverend, they looked straight past me.
"Best leave the baby with the girl James." said one of the men in a low, raspy voice. James turned to face me and I saw that he was laughing!
"What is so funny?" I asked him.
"You, here take Ric I just have to talk to Michael over there and then we'll go, we can go back via the forest path even though it is the most dangerous way.
"That's fine. Remember when I said that you have to do everything I say exactly when I say it?"
"Yes..."
