Who was the First President of the United States?

Can you guess who was the first president of the United States? Read on to find out...
The first president of the United States was John Hanson. However, George Washington was the first president under the Constitution of United States of America.

John Hanson was born in Maryland in the year 1715. He belonged to one of the traditional, patriarchal families of American patriots. He was elected to the Provincial Legislature of Maryland in 1775. In 1777, he became one of the delegates to the United States in Congress Assembled (also known as Continental Congress).

The United States of America was formed on March 1, 1781, under the Articles of Confederation. John Hanson became the first President of United States under the Articles of Confederation.

The members of the Congress Assembled, including George Washington, unanimously chose John Hanson to be the first president of the US.

The role of the president was not well defined in the Articles of Confederation. It was a herculean task to rule the country, which was under foreign rule. When John Hanson, took office the American Revolutionary War had just ended.

As soon as he took office, John Hanson delivered an official Thanks of Congress to George Washington for the victory in the battle of Yorktown.

Hanson passed the legislation for establishing the Central Bank of North America known as the Bank of North America. As the first president of the United States, Hanson established the "Great Seal of the United States" and "Treasury Department". He also formulated a department known as Foreign Affairs Department. He created a post called "Secretary of War". Last, but not the least, John Hanson declared Thanksgiving Day as a national holiday. Thanksgiving was the first national US holiday and it is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November every year.

You could rightly say the official measures taken by John Hanson set precedent for all the future presidents of the United States.
