Chapter Ten
Evan had been staying at mine for a week and things were going well. It was like old times; we laughed and joked and seemed so carefree. My 18th birthday was fast approaching and we were making plans to celebrate it.
"Maybe you should invite Zac down?" Evan asked, tentatively.
"I don't think that's a good idea, do you?"
"Yes, I do actually. We always said we'd celebrate our 18ths together and well all did for mine and Zac's. So should we for yours too."
"Look, Evan, silly little things we said when we were children do not matter anymore. Zac is not invited, okay? I'm doing this for him!" and with that, Evan dropped the subject. I desperately wanted Zac there, but I knew it wasn't going to happen. He would only get attached and it would hurt him even more. It would hurt me, too. I didn't want to have to say goodbye to him yet again. I hadn't spoken to him since the phonecall and I decided it would be best if I didn't speak to him again.
It was two days until my birthday and Evan and I had decided that we would party in the clubs in the City Center then come home and continue the party, just me and him. I was excited and couldn't wait; I knew he'd gotten me a present, I just didn't know what it was. I shopped for my birthday dress with my Mum and chose a black and blue one with silver gems lining the pockets. It was beautiful and my Mum said I looked gorgeous in it. Maybe I'd meet someone and they'd help me forget about Zac; the thought made me smile. I was beginning to get over him and I was starting to feel good about it. I mean, I would always love him, he was my best friend, he'd been there when I felt I had no one. But it was good to move on, I needed a fresh start without him.
The day of my birthday dawned and Evan came bursting into my room with a huge smile on his face.
"Your present is in the living room," he winked at me. I was so excited, what had he gotten me? I got out of bed and went to go downstairs when he grabbed my arm and pulled me back.
"You might want to shower and get dressed first," he said.
"Why?"
"Because, we're going out as soon as you get your present. Now go!" he said, slapping my bottom so I'd hurry. I walked into the bathroom and turned on the shower. I pulled my hair out of its ponytail, undressed and stepped into the shower. I took my time to get ready, I wanted to look nice on my birthday. I carefully stepped out of the shower and dried my hair; I applied my make up with care and chose a pretty outfit. When I was done I stood in front of the mirror in my room; I looked good. I was wearing a white T, blue high-waisted shorts with gold buttons and black and gold shoes. I smiled at my reflection and headed downstairs into the kitchen.
"Morning, Mum," I smiled.
"Morning, honey, do you want some breakfast?"
"No, thanks. I'll just have an apple." I grabbed the apple and headed into the hallway.
"Evan?" I called.
"I'm just getting ready, G. Go and get your present, now!" I smiled at his enthusiasm and opened the door to the living room. My apple made a loud thud as it hit the floor and rolled away. I stood there with my mouth gaping open.
"Happy birthday, Gracie," Zac said.
