Who Is Haunting Maine? (Part 1)

Imagine yourself standing on a cliff as waves crash against the rocks below. The moon is full. Looking out over the sea you spot an old, abandoned lighthouse. Suddenly a flickering light appears in one of the windows. Someone or something still resides there....
Along Maine’s coast is a small fishing village called Port Clyde. The residence in question is a white 1870 Port Clyde house. It’s a summer cottage which consists of two stories and a cellar. The bedrooms are located on the second floor having a view toward the sea. Being a house as a lot of houses are with a past it has its own ghostly residents.

In 1972 when Carol Olivieri’s parents owned it she encountered strange apparitions. During the night a woman in a white nightgown appeared before Carol’s bed. This entity had long, flowing hair and upon one of her long, slender fingers she wore a wedding band. Carol could see right through her and she could sense the spirit’s desperation. The second time Carol encountered the woman was in a dream. In this dream she could see the same young woman only this time she had a young boy with her. Turning the boy over to Carol for protection the woman disappeared. While the boy was cowering on the bed by her a spirit of a very, old woman appeared in a black hood. She had bright, green eyes and a dark complexion. The spirit of the young boy was terrified of this evil presence. Carol concentrated on a white light in the room as a symbol of psychic protection and the black hooded old figure disappeared. The young woman’s spirit returned and took the boy back.

Carol’s brother Bob had an encounter of a different kind. While visiting his parents he was awakened during the night by the sound of little kid’s feet padding up and down the hallway outside his room. Thinking it might be his nephew he went to investigate. In the hallway the sound of footsteps stopped and his nephew was sound asleep. As he returned to bed the footsteps started up again. Bob got up again and again the sounds stopped once he went out in the hallway and so on for about an hour. Tired of this he returned to bed and stayed there. Suddenly he felt a little kid presence climb into bed with him and felt its pressure crawling up against his body. Then a little cold hand pulled his hair.

In 1976 a psychic investigation was made. Parapsychologist Hans Holzer and his film crew and a psychic Ingrid Beckman examined the cottage. Ingrid Beckman sensed the presence of a young boy and actually made contact with a female ghost which was identified as Margaret Barter. She had been awaiting the return of her husband from sea. She had apparently lived in the previous block house of the 18th century upon which spot now stood the 1870 cottage. This ghostly spirit didn’t seem to realize she had passed on and was unhappy. The young woman longed to move to Kennebunk and live in a town house if only her husband would return. Searching town records it was discovered that her husband had died at sea in 1820 and she had passed on as an old woman in 1882. Through the help of the psychic Margaret Barter was finally able to break through and pass into the other world to rejoin her husband there.

As for the young boy and the hooded apparition in all probability they still reside on the property.

We now move along to the coastal port town of Tenant’s Harbor located northeast of Portland where the "East Wind Inn" is located. The inn is open to guests and dining from April through November. The building was built in 1860 and has three stories (nine rooms on the 3rd fl. and seven on the 2nd fl.), an attic and a basement. On the 1st floor there is a lounge and restaurant. The inn’s large windows look out toward the sea. The basement had been converted into an apartment for the owner.

During its history its top floor was being rented by a Masonic Lodge and the second floor used to sew sails and later used for a community meeting room. The businessman who built the inn had a general store on the first floor and his sons had a tin shop in the basement. It was renovated in 1921 and called the "Wan –e – set Inn". Finally abandoned in 1954 and stood vacated until 1974 when Tim Watts bought it and called it the "East Wind Inn".

And so, you say? According to psychic Annika Hurwitt it appears that an unstable woman was murdered in the 1800’s near the "East Wind Inn". She was stabbed in the chest and strangled. It seems that this is the entity haunting the 3rd floor and attic. The owner himself has been pushed by an unseen, hostile presence in the attic and guests staying in rooms 12 and 14 on the top floor have felt moving cold spots and have awakened during the night feeling very cold.

As they have tried to get up they seem to have been held down by an unseen force feeling a pressure against their chests and with their throats constricting have been unable to scream. However since 1996 guests have only felt a pressure holding them back.

The windows in these rooms have shattered without explanation and 3rd floor guests have heard faint, wailing sounds around 3 AM. A guest, who was staying on the 2nd floor right under rooms 12 and 14 was rudely pushed out of bed at 4 AM. In the 1980’s again without any reasonable explanation a part of the roof above either room 12 or 14 blew off and the mattress in that particular room was found cut in half.

After psychic research was done on these rooms psychic Annika Hurwitt said she sensed a very angry, hurt presence, who was murdered by either a beloved husband or boyfriend, who was cheating on her. She had been seeking revenge by trying to make the living experience what she herself experienced during her violent death – held down against her will, stabbed and strangled.

The owner has felt a presence in the living room on the first floor. A gray apparition has been seen floating on the main staircase and odd noises such as doors slamming by themselves and the dining room doors swinging back and forth have been heard.

The psychic Annika Hurwitt saw and old sea captain smoking a pipe standing looking out the window in the living room. During a winter when the owner was away a friend was left house sitting. Living in the basement apartment she would often hear footsteps overhead in the area of the dining room and kitchen. Checking the sounds they would stop. At another time when a chef was left watching the inn he glimpsed an apparition watching him as he put products away in the pantry.

The consensus is that the entities on the 1st floor and basement were just men relaxing and playing cards, occasionally moving about. The recent years at the inn have been calmer however there is no reason to believe these entities have moved on.

Make your own conclusions believe it or not? The facts stand for themselves and we will continue our tour of the unexplained in Maine next time in part 2.
